Keeping Up the British Spirit

Keeping Up the British Spirit
(to the tune of What A Friend We Have In Jesus)
When the men were out there fighting
All the women stayed at home
Washing, cooking, making bullets
Worked their fingers to the bone
Comforting the little children
Zeppelins flying overhead
Keeping up the British sirit
By hiding tears that they may shed
While the men were digging trenches
Fighting in the Flanders Fields
Wives were digging in their gardens
Growing veg to make their meals
Women in munitions factories
Driving buses, trams and trains
Keeping up the British spirit
Life would never be the same
When the war was finally over
And husbands came back to their wives
They found the women were much stronger
And wanted very different lives
Time away from the kitchen
Time to follow their own dreams
Keeping up the British spirit
Is not as easy as it seems
